Sunshade Blinds – Launch The High Profile “Blinds & Child Safety Awareness Campaign”
Every death that results from infants and toddlers coming to harm through the cords of window and door blinds is surely one too many. In recent years despite press articles and broadcast media coverage highlighting the dangers, this issue, Sunshade Blinds Ltd believe more needs to be done to publicise the issue and improve awareness by all involved in specifying and manufacturing solar control blinds to not only educate the market especially parents and child minders about the hazard blinds cords present.
For this reason Sunshade Blinds Ltd, manufacturers of cordless childsafe integral sealed unit blinds are embarking on a high profile social media and web campaign that we hope will prevent further fatalities as well as get the law changed to ban blinds that use cords.
At the time of writing this (February 17th 2010), we have seen this past week two more fatalities from very young children coming into contact with the cords of window and door blinds. This was also a further incident last year that also flagged up the problem in the national media.
It is the belief of the directors of Sunshade Blinds that legislation should now be enacted to ban the use of Blinds with cords that present such a hazard.
Paul Buckley, Chairman of PJB Glass Group and owner of Sunshade Blinds Ltd says “There is absolutely no reason in this day and age why children are dying year after year through strangulation from coming into contact with blinds cords. Strangulation is such a terrible way to die on top the fact of is the tragedy that it is very young children being involved and that it is all so needless. Those of us in the industry must now surely come together to act.”
Paul Buckley states his Corby based Integral Blinds business and Glassteq the Sealed Unit manufacturers will now spare no effort in the campaign to have loose corded window blinds banned.
Look… no strings – Our cordless magnet operated integrated venetian blinds
Take a look at our integrated blinds video to see how our cordless childsafe blinds are operated. This is why we say that the deaths of children coming into conflict with blinds year after year are so unnecessary.
Not only are our blinds childsafe, but they are also fire safe also as our aluminum venetian blinds are entirely enclosed within the double glazed sealed unit. (For additional fire safety rated glazing we also use Pyrobel glass.)
Add to this that our integrated blinds are dust free and never need cleaning, that they do not flap around making a noise and sending anything on your window sills onto the floor then the features and benefits really do begin to stack up and make the case for our product.
They are also available in an extensive range of colour options.
“We typically hear about one or two children dying after becoming tangled in blind cords in the UK each year and there are many more near misses.”
Sheila Merrill, home safety manager for England at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said: ”We typically hear about one or two children dying after becoming tangled in blind cords in the UK each year and there are many more near misses.
”To hear about two cases in five days in the same area brings home to all of us the danger looped cords pose to children.”
She added: ”The danger for young children is that a loop which hangs at waist height for an adult could slip around the neck of a young child if he or she falls or, if the loop is at floor level, it could become wrapped around the neck of a baby who is crawling.
”There have also been cases in which babies have been accidentally strangled by cord loops hanging into their cots.
”If you’re thinking of buying new blinds, look for a design which doesn’t have cords or chains.”
Support our campaign… support Harrison’s Law
After 3 year old Harrison Joyce died in Lichfield in 2010, his family started the Harrison’s Law campaign to have looped corded blinds banned. Sunshade Blinds Ltd of Corby wholeheartedly support this campaign as there is no reason for loop corded blinds or in fact corded blinds in this day and age.
More information about the Joyce family’s campaign can be found at www.harrisonslaw.co.uk.
